Celebrating 40 Years of SamTrans Service
On July 1, 1976, the San Mateo County Transit District officially began its first day of bus operations. Created by the State Legislature and backed by voters, the agency absorbed and combined 11 different bus operators in the Peninsula.
Over the past four decades, SamTrans has grown and changed inexorably. The District obtained managerial oversight of Caltrain commuter rail service and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority, while adding paratransit vehicles to its service.
SamTrans operates 79 routes throughout San Mateo County.
