SamTrans Announces 2017 Art Takes a Bus Ride Contest for San Mateo County Youth

Now in its 13th year, SamTrans is holding its annual Art Takes a Bus Ride contest for young artists throughout San Mateo County.

The contest invites local students to submit artistic creations for the theme “The Magic of SamTrans.” The winning entries will be displayed as a wrap on a SamTrans bus for an entire year. The winning student art also will be displayed on ad cards inside SamTrans buses.  The collaborative effort between SamTrans and the San Mateo County Office of Education engages students in the classroom and emphasizes arts in the community.

Schools throughout San Mateo County will be promoting the contest to their students. Submissions can come from anyone ages Grades 1 through 6, with one winner selected from each grade. All submissions must be received by close of business on Friday, February 24, and can be sent either through participating schools, or directly to the San Mateo County Office of Education, 101 Twin Dolphin Dr., Redwood City, CA 94065.

According to San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools Anne E. Campbell, every year students from all over San Mateo County enter the Art Takes a Bus Ride competition.

“I’m always amazed at the resulting student art and at how wonderful the winning work looks on SamTrans buses as they travel their routes throughout our county,” said Campbell. “It will be intriguing to see how this year’s theme, The Magic of SamTrans, engages our students as they create their artistic renditions of magical buses. I can’t wait to see what they come up with."

The winning entrants will also be honored with special recognition certificates at the SamTrans Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, May 3. The board meeting begins at 2 p.m. and takes place at SamTrans headquarters on 1250 San Carlos Avenue in San Carlos.
