SamTrans Announces Operator and Maintenance Employees of the Year

Andrew Cheung, a 17-year bus operator, and Jairo Patino, a nine-year maintenance mechanic, have been named SamTrans’ 2019 Employees of the Year.

Each year, SamTrans recognizes the achievements of its bus operators and maintenance workers with Employee of the Year honors, and Cheung and Patino were formally recognized at the agency’s March Board of Directors meeting this week. To be considered for the Employee of the Year award, SamTrans employees must not have had any preventable accidents, unexcused absences or disciplinary actions on their 2019 record.

Cheung began his career with SamTrans in 2002 as a full-time bus operator.  Before joining SamTrans he worked as a bus operator for Coach USA out of San Francisco. He is currently assigned to routes 398 and 280, while also covering a few school routes.

Cheung was born in Hong Kong, and moved to California in 2001. He currently lives in Palo Alto with his wife, Hong-Zhu, and three children.

Patino came on board SamTrans Bus Maintenance in 2010 as a utility worker. He was promoted to Mechanic ‘C’ in 2015 due to his diligence, dedication and work ethic.

He has been married to his wife, Maria, for 24 years and has two children.
