SamTrans Board of Directors Passes Operating and Capital Budgets

The San Mateo County Transit District Board of Directors unanimously approved the Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 Operating and Capital Budgets at its regular board meeting on Wednesday, June 5. The adopted SamTrans’ FY2020 Operating Budget is $216.9 million and the Capital Budget is $14.2 million.

This is the District’s first annual Operating Budget to include funds from Measure W, a voter-approved ½ cent sales tax that goes into effect on July 1, 2019. Funds from the measure will support day-to-day management of District services, including investments called for in the SamTrans Business Plan like the recently launched SamTrans OnDemand pilot in Pacifica’s Linda Mar neighborhood and the reintroduction of express bus service with a new route between Foster City and San Francisco scheduled for August, 2019. Measure W revenue is also funding a comprehensive study known as “Reimagine SamTrans,” which will inform how to improve District services and better meet the community’s mobility needs.

In keeping with the District’s need to conserve financial resources, the Capital Budget’s final recommendations reflect the most critical projects that support the District’s goals. Approved projects include paratransit vehicle replacements, IT system upgrades and facility improvements. There are additional significant projects that continue to be developed and reviewed by staff, which may be presented later in the fiscal year for Board consideration.

Adoption of the proposed budgets is an important step along the way towards a future that provides service that is relevant, adaptable and financially sustainable.

The District’s FY 2020 Operating Budget begins July 1, 2019 and ends on June 30, 2020.
