Transit District Board Elects New Officers, Welcomes New Member

The San Mateo County Transit District Board of Directors welcomed a new member and elected new officers at its January meeting. Board member Rose Guilbault was elected chair and board member Karyl Matsumoto was elected vice chair, in unanimous votes.

“My goal for the coming year is to find ways we can work together, to be good stewards of the public’s money, to protect our service for those who depend on us, and to deliver the message to those who would cut our budgets and threaten our service that there is a human consequence to their actions,” Guilbault said.

“We must tell the story of why public transportation matters and our painful hearings this summer on service cuts provide the words for that story. I assume this role, proud to be the first Latina ever to chair the Board, proud to be able to speak up in Spanish for those who cannot speak for themselves,” Guilbault said.

Guilbault, who previously served as vice chair, is a public member of the board and resides in Burlingame. Matsumoto, who serves on the South San Francisco City Council, represents Cities – North County on the board.

San Carlos Vice Mayor Omar Ahmad also was sworn in and represents Cities – South County on the board. He also represents the Transit District on the Joint Powers Board.

The Transit District’s board has nine members, with two representatives from the county Board of Supervisors; three city council representatives, who are appointed by the Cities Selection Committee; three public members from different geographic regions of the county; and a transportation expert, who is appointed by the county Board of Supervisors.

The Transit District board meets the second Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. at 1250 San Carlos Ave. in San Carlos, two blocks from El Camino bus service and the train station.
