Transit Toy Drive to be Held at Redwood City Hometown Holidays Event
WHO: SamTrans and Caltrain employees, holiday costumed characters, the Salvation Army and U.S. Marines.
WHAT: SamTrans and Caltrain will host a booth at Redwood City’s Hometown Holidays. The transit agencies will collect new, unwrapped toys and books for the Salvation Army and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program. Those in attendance will be treated to holiday fun and goodies. To cap off the day, the SamTrans mini bus will cruise down Broadway in the Hometown Holiday’s annual parade.
WHEN: Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
WHERE: Downtown Redwood City, across the street from Courthouse Square at Middlefield Road and Broadway.
WHY: The San Mateo County Transit District has sponsored a toy drive since 2001. In years past the Caltrain Holiday Train, a glittering show-train decorated with thousands of lights, ushered in the holiday season on the Peninsula, stopping at selected stations and collecting thousands of toys. Although budget considerations forced the suspension of the Holiday Train in 2010, SamTrans and Caltrain have continued to conduct a toy drive, collecting more than 45,000 gifts for needy Bay Area children.
