SamTrans Seeks New “Coastside” Public Board Member

With the resignation of John Barbour from the San Mateo County Transit District Board of Directors, a new position has opened up for a Public Member from the Coastside region of the county.

Eligible applicants must reside in the coastal zone of the county and may not have held elected public office within the previous 12 months.

This Public Member will be appointed by six members of the SamTrans board -- the three members appointed by the Board of Supervisors and the three members appointed by the Cities Selection Committee. The seat has an unexpired term, which ends Dec. 31, 2006.

The Board consists of nine members: three members appointed by the Board of Supervisors, two of whom are members of the Board of Supervisors and one who possesses expertise in the field of transportation; three members appointed by the Cities Selection Committee, who are council members at the time of their appointment; and three Public Members, from specific geographic regions of the county. Each term is four years.

San Mateo County Transit District provides SamTrans bus service throughout San Mateo County and into parts of San Francisco and Palo Alto. The transit district also offers Redi-Wheels paratransit service for persons with disabilities who are unable to ride SamTrans.

The deadline to apply for this position is Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at 5 p.m.
