The Service Network

Bus ridership in San Mateo County escalated from four million in fiscal year 1976 to more than 14.2 million in fiscal year 2006. As the district completes its 31th year of service, ridership has increased 355 percent.

SamTrans service is designed to meet the needs of Peninsula travelers with hundreds to daily trips along the Bayshore corridor between Palo Alto and downtown San Francisco. Commute service to San Francisco is provided along El Camino Real and Mission Street in the north county. Hundreds of other daily trips service San Francisco International Airport, San Mateo County BART stations and the 20 cities which make up San Mateo County.

The SamTrans fixed-route bus system consists of 54 routes, 47 operated by district personnel, seven routes driven by MV Transportation and one route operated by RediCoast. On an average weekday, these vehicles travel more than 32,000 miles and carry more than 47,000 passengers. This total includes about 24 percent youth riders, 60 percent adults and 16 percent seniors and customers with disabilities. Redi-Wheels, the district’s paratransit service, serves approximately 1,000 mobility-impaired patrons daily on 76 buses, vans and sedans supported by supplemental taxi service.

The district provides special service to and from Monster Park for 49ers football games. SamTrans’ buses also travel to Bay Meadows racecourse, the San Mateo County Fair and the Bay to Breakers footrace.
