SamTrans Board Member Chosen to Chair APTA Committee
San Mateo County Transit District Board member Shirley Harris of Daly City continues
to distinguish herself as an advocate for transportation issues. Harris was recently
named as the new chair of the Leadership Committee for the American Public
Transportation Association. Harris is the first SamTrans Board member to chair the
15-member committee that is comprised of nationwide transit leaders.
The committee oversees the development of the Leadership APTA program, a professional
development program designed to identify and nurture the next generation of leaders
in the transit industry and within the APTA. Through Leadership APTA, 25 selected
individuals participate in an extensive series of meetings that address the issues,
skills, and demands of transit and APTA leadership.
"I'm pleased and honored to be the first transit district board member to chair the
Leadership APTA committee," said Harris. "This program has enjoyed great success in
developing tomorrow's new leadership, and I look forward, both as a board member and
an advocate of transit, to seeing that success continue."
Harris also serves on APTA's Executive Council of the Transit Board Members Committee
as Region 6 spokesperson, representing California, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Washington,
Oregon, Alaska and Hawaii.
Harris is currently serving her ninth year as a public member on the SamTrans board.
She has more than 25 years of experience in telecommunications and human resource
management, and also has served on Daly City's Rent Review, Parks and Recreation, and
Planning commissions.
The transit district operates a complex network of buses, shuttles and paratransit
vehicles throughout San Mateo County and into parts of San Francisco and Palo Alto.
It also is the managing agency for the San Mateo County Transportation Authority,
which manages the expenditure of Measure A funds, and Caltrain and is a partner in
the BART extension to Millbrae.
The American Public Transportation Association is an international organization with
members in the fields of bus transportation, rapid transit and commuter rail
organizations. APTA has been representing the transportation industry for more than
100 years.
