Transit District Director Elected to National Committee
When most people dream of retirement, they hope to travel by riding the train and
enjoy their grandchildren. San Mateo County Transit District Board Member Arthur
Lloyd does all of those things in addition to keeping a very busy schedule as a
SamTrans and Caltrain policy board member.
Lloyd also is president of California Operation Lifesaver and a past director of the
National Association of Rail Passengers, works for the San Joaquin Valley Rail
Committee and the Coast Rail Coordinating Council. He also is a member of the
California State Railroad Museum Foundation and an advisor to the Golden Gate
Railroad Museum. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Lloyd's most recent appointment will keep him busy in Washington, D.C. for the next
year as the secretary to the American Public Transportation Association's Transit
Board Committee.
"Art is a wonderful combination of experience and perseverance," said APTA Transit
Board Committee Chair Mattie P. Carter. "He brings enthusiasm and talent to his
position on the Transit Board Committee and he will help to support and guide the
committee's progress during his year-long term."
The committee's purpose is to aid the members of transit boards throughout the
country in their obligations as policy makers for public transit and to provide a
forum through which the members of all boards can express their views on APTA
policies and direction.
During various times over his long career in transportation, Lloyd has been part
owner of a charter bus company and a travel agency. He also has worked in several
key positions with Amtrak before his retirement in 1991, most notably as the director
of public affairs for the Western United States. His commitment to public
transportation is evident in the long hours he works in support of passenger rail
systems across the country.
Colleagues frequently comment on his dedication and passion.
"In the decades that I have known Art, not a single individual comes to mind who has
contributed more to the future of rail passenger service," said Bruce Heard, one of
Lloyd's former Amtrak colleagues.
"Serving on APTA's Transit Board Committee is important to me because it gives me the
opportunity to work with public transportation board members across the country in
shaping the future of passenger service in the United States," said Lloyd.
Lloyd's passions also extend to spending time with his wife of 57 years, Eleanor, his
three children, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
