Bay to Breakers a Winner for SamTrans
SamTrans scored a personal best for this year's Bay to Breakers Race, carrying almost
60 percent more riders than last year.
A total of 1,482 runners and enthusiasts rode SamTrans to and from the annual
footrace in San Francisco, compared with 931 last year. SamTrans staff conducted an
aggressive marketing campaign to inform people of the district's express service,
which drops riders off just blocks from the starting line.
The increase far exceeded the marketing goal of boosting ridership 10 percent over
last year's. One reason for the success of the bus promotion may be the fact that
Caltrain's special train service to the Bay to Breakers did not run this year because
of track construction.
SamTrans offered incentives to get riders to prepurchase their tickets and promoted
bus service through advertising in newspapers and on bus sides, the Bay to Breakers
brochure and on several Websites.
