Transit District Promotes Role in Better Communities
SamTrans patrons at six transit hubs around San Mateo County will get something
unusual with their bus trips on Oct. 16 - a personal "thank you" from the transit
district's "wheels."
Top managers at SamTrans will be on hand at transit stations, shopping centers and
other sites that morning to thank passengers for supporting their local communities by
using public transit.
The station visits are intended to personalize SamTrans' participation in a nationwide
public awareness campaign to highlight transit's role in improving communities.
Sponsored by the American Public Transit Association, "Communities in Motion Day" will
focus on the many ways that communities - and even non-transit riders -- benefit by
having good public transit networks.
"Public transit plays a vital role in communities that goes beyond moving people,"
said SamTrans General Manager/CEO Mike Scanlon. "This event gives us an opportunity
to highlight those benefits and to thank the people who depend on our buses, trains
and other services every day."
Among the locations where SamTrans' staff will greet passengers are the Millbrae
Intermodal Station and the Serramonte, Hillsdale and Sequoia Station shopping centers.
Greeters will hand out memo pads, bus token holders and other items.
During the same week, SamTrans and Caltrain are running ads in local newspapers about
public transit's economic benefits to communities. One ad, for example, pictures a
bus, a train and a BART car with the headline, "Think of Them as Engines of Economic
Growth."
Public transportation promotes economic growth and creates job opportunities for
millions of citizens. Every dollar spent on public transportation returns up to six
dollars in economic and other benefits, which is one reason why SamTrans staff will be
greeting riders at shopping malls who might not otherwise be traveling and spending
money.
The San Mateo County Transit District carries more than 97,000 riders a day on all of
its modes, providing safe, comfortable and convenient service throughout the county
and into neighboring counties for trips to work, as well as for shopping and leisure
activities.
The transit district manages Caltrain's regional rail service and supports the
operation of the BART extension to San Francisco International Airport. At the
Millbrae Intermodal Station, passengers can choose among SamTrans, BART and Caltrain
to get where they want to go.
