Transit District Honors Employees of the Year
Hard work and a can-do attitude go a long way, especially when being judged by your
peers. Today, the San Mateo County Transit District recognized two people who were
voted Employees of the Year.
Bus Operator Kitty Mansfield of Sunnyvale and Mechanic A Gregory Reschke of Daly City
earned the honor of being chosen by their peers and supervisors as outstanding
employees. The winners met stringent criteria and were chosen from among the 2002
employees of the month.
Mansfield has been a bus operator with SamTrans since 1976 when her Airporter route
was folded into the new San Mateo County bus system. Today, she enjoys driving the
express routes into The City.
"It's been fun watching SamTrans grow from the ground up," she said. "We've gone from
old, mismatched buses to a beautiful new fleet with advanced communications systems
and global positioning."
Mansfield has been named Employee of the Month three times in her 26-year career with
SamTrans. "I never expected to win Operator of the Year," she said. "It's a great
honor, and it's taken me a long time to get here."
Mansfield loves her job and really enjoys visiting with her passengers. " I couldn't
have chosen a better career for my personality," she said. "I'll retire when I stop
having fun."
"Kitty is what I call a silent leader," said Bus Transportation Superintendent Tad
Wood. "Through her actions she is able to create a harmonious environment for her
colleagues, and ultimately for our customers."
In her spare time, Mansfield loves to be outdoors traveling, hiking, working in her
yard or exercising.
Reschke began his SamTrans career in 1997 as a mechanic B and within six months was
promoted to mechanic A. He has been named Employee of the Month twice and was a
member of the First Place Maintenance Team in the SamTrans 2002 Bus Roadeo. He,
along with his teammates and the operations team, won the Regional Grand Champion bus
roadeo award and ultimately represented the district at the 2002 APTA International
Bus Roadeo in Las Vegas.
"I like working the swing shift because we are given a lot of the special projects to
do and every day is different - it can change in a moment's notice," said Reschke.
"I also enjoy working with the people at SamTrans; I like the wide variety of
personalities and backgrounds."
"Reschke's positive attitude and cooperation has earned him the respect and
admiration of his peers and supervisors," said Bus Maintenance Manager David Olmeda.
"He's a team player and a valuable contributor to the SamTrans bus maintenance team."
In his spare time, Reschke works on his house and follows Formula One car racing. "I
like the thrill of Formula One racing," said Reschke, who follows car racing year
round."
