SamTrans Elects Officers, Adds New Member
Michael Guingona was unanimously elected chair of the San Mateo County Transit
District Board of Directors at its January meeting.
Guingona, who is appointed by the Cities Selection Committee, is a Daly City council
member.
Burlingame city council member Mary Janney was elected vice chair.
The Cities Selection committee recently named a new member to the SamTrans board.
Redwood City councilman Jim Hartnett was appointed to fill the vacancy left by former
board member and Menlo Park Mayor Stephen Schmidt's recent retirement.
The transit district consists of nine members: two from the county board of
supervisors; one transportation expert, appointed by the board of supervisors; three
council members, representing each of the judicial districts in the county and
appointed by the Cities Selection Committee; and three public members, one of whom
must reside on the coastside, appointed by the above six members.
The SamTrans board meets the second Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. at SamTrans,
1250 San Carlos Ave. in San Carlos.
The transit district operates a complex network of buses, shuttles and paratransit
vehicles throughout San Mateo County and into parts of San Francisco and Palo Alto.
It also is the managing agency for the San Mateo County Transportation Authority,
which manages the expenditure of Measure A funds, and Caltrain and is a partner in
Caltrain rail service and the BART extension to Millbrae.
