SamTrans Announces Annual Safety Awards
Traffic congestion, weather conditions and road rage are occupational stresses that
bus operators face on most days. Combine this with the unpredictability of
pedestrians and drivers, and it becomes more impressive to learn that SamTrans bus
operators drive the equivalent distance of California's length - from San Diego to
Eureka - about 44 times each month without a preventable accident.
In 2002, the transit district's 350 bus operators drove 7.7 million miles and the 88
employees in the SamTrans Maintenance Department worked nearly 155,000 hours.
In recognition of the district's outstanding safety record SamTrans General Manager/
Chief Executive Officer Mike Scanlon presented the district's annual base safety
awards. The awards are given to the operations and maintenance department with the
best safety record for the year.
North Base bus operators won the 2002 base safety award in honor of its safe driving
record. North Base bus operators drove an average of 100,000 miles between
preventable accidents.
Maintenance employees at the John T. Ficara South Base Operations and Maintenance
facility were awarded the maintenance safe base award for their overall safe work
environment.
"Safety is SamTrans' top priority and it's reflected in our safety record," said
Scanlon." In a year with only three lost-time injuries between the two bases, it's
difficult to single out one maintenance group. Everyone, bus operators and
maintenance employees alike, should be recognized for our outstanding safety record."
