BART/SFO Extension Breaks Another Record

The new BART/SFO extension continues to break ridership records. This year the holiday rush brought out a record numbers of riders on the San Mateo County line, which includes stations in Colma, South San Francisco, San Bruno, SFO and Millbrae.

More than 32,000 riders used the five-station extension on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving – the highest ridership the extension has ever seen since opening in June of 2003.

BART also broke a new ridership record to the new San Francisco International Airport station on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving –traditionally the busiest travel day of the year. Nearly 11,000 riders used BART to and from SFO – a 14.4% increase over the same time last year.

Additionally, if you look at the entire 6-day Thanksgiving holiday travel period, the SFO station saw an even larger increase in ridership over the same period last year. Between, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the following Monday, there was a 14% increase in the number of riders using the SFO station compared with the same period last year.

Both agencies credit the growth on the extension to SamTrans’ and BART’s continued community outreach and marketing programs as well as the results of a rebounding economy.

SamTrans is a partner with BART on the five San Mateo County extension stations, which include Colma, South San Francisco, San Bruno, SFO and Millbrae. SamTrans also partners with the San Francisco Municipal Railway and Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority to provide Caltrain service between San Francisco and San Jose, with commute-hour service to Gilroy. Caltrain also operates 62 weekend trains.
