BART/SFO Extension Ridership Growing
Nearly 720,000 students, travelers, residents and workers, hop on BART trains in San
Mateo County each month. And that number continues to grow, up eight percent from a
year ago.
Ridership increases are being credited to improvements in the BART schedule, which
went into effect in September, providing more consistent service to the stations in
the county. Average weekday ridership in September reached an all-time high of
28,741, a 15.5 percent increase over September 2003.
Also, the Bay Area appears to be coming out of its economic slump, sending more people
back to work and causing increased traffic congestion on the roads. As a result,
former transit riders are returning to the Bay Area’s transit network and new riders
are being converted from the car to the train.
Neighboring transit agencies also have noted ridership increases. Caltrain ridership
is up nearly 17 percent. And the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is
reporting improved ridership on its light rail system, as well.
SamTrans is a partner with BART on the five San Mateo County extension stations, which
include Colma, South San Francisco, San Bruno, SFO and Millbrae. SamTrans also
partners with the San Francisco Municipal Railway and Santa Clara Valley
Transportation Authority to provide Caltrain service between San Francisco and San
Jose, with commute-hour service to Gilroy. Caltrain also operates 62 weekend trains.
