Transit District Hires New CFO
SamTrans’ General Manager/CEO Michael Scanlon announced the selection of Virginia
Harrington as the transit agency’s new Chief Financial Officer tasked with overseeing
the Finance Division for the district’s three agencies: SamTrans, Caltrain and the San
Mateo County Transportation Authority.
Harrington of San Francisco has been with the San Francisco Municipal Railway as its
deputy general manager of finance and administration since 2000. In her role there
she oversaw the administration of the agency’s $486 million budget and managed the
revenue collections, payroll, process and control, accounting, budget and information
technology functions.
Notably, Harrington has played an instrumental role in Muni’s participation in the
Translink program. Translink is a regional smart card that will eventually allow
passengers to connect seamlessly from one transit agency to the next throughout the
Bay Area. Both SamTrans and Caltrain are also participating in the Translink program.
Prior to joining Muni, Harrington worked in a variety of financial capacities with the
City of Palo Alto. When she left Palo Alto, she had risen from senior financial
analyst to deputy director/assistant director of the Administrative Services
Department.
Harrington will join the transit district at the end of November.
