SamTrans Launches New Service

SamTrans is unveiling its “new fall line,” an express bus that promises to bring a touch of class to riding the bus to work.

Riders on the new “REX” route, which links East Palo Alto with the Millbrae Intermodal Station by way of Menlo Park, Redwood Shores and airport hotels, will travel in style on cushy new buses.

And the streamlined “Regional Express” service, which debuts Aug. 23, will reduce commute times by serving a limited number of stops. Think of that: arriving at work “fashionably early.”

Unlike traditional express routes, REX will operate in both directions during peak commute periods, from 5:12 a.m. to 9:29 a.m. and again from 3:45 p.m. to 7:15 pm.

The route serves neighborhoods in East Palo Alto and Menlo Park, the Tyco business park, Redwood Shores near Electronic Arts and Oracle Corp. The route also serves airport hotel row along Bayshore Highway in Burlingame as well as the Millbrae Intermodal Station at its northern terminal.

REX features buses with reclining seats, footrests, overhead reading lights and luggage racks. The coaches have only one door: with a limited number of stops, passengers will not be getting on and off the bus as frequently as on a local route.

Although the buses are high-end, the fare is not. Riders will pay the regular local fare, which is $1.25 for adults. Discounted monthly passes also are available.

The low-emissions buses meet California Air Quality Resources Board requirements; they use diesel particulate filters and ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel.

SamTrans purchased 11 of the new vehicles with funds from the state’s Traffic Congestion Relief Program. The program provided $40 million for the purchase of 96 buses for express service throughout the Bay Area. Other agencies participating in the program include AC Transit, County Connection in Contra Costa County and Golden Gate Transit.
