SamTrans Extends Free Pass Program
SamTrans has extended its popular free pass program until December 2005. The "Maximize
the Value of your Pass" campaign rewards frequent riders with a free monthly pass when
they purchase 11 consecutive monthly passes. Originally started as a pilot program in
2003, the campaign was set to expire in June 2004.
"Response to the program has been outstanding," said Marketing Manager Patrick Boland.
"We had a net increase in pass sales of $68,496 last year." More than 1,700 people
purchased passes in 2003 than in the previous year. Clearly, frequent SamTrans riders
recognize the value of purchasing a monthly pass. Riders can save up to 33 percent
by purchasing a monthly pass. Monthly passes are a great value because they allow
unlimited rides.
Riders can participate in the free pass program in one of three ways: Once a passenger
has accumulated 11 consecutive months worth of passes, they can be redeemed for a
free monthly pass.
Or, participants in the program can pay for an entire year's worth of passes up front,
getting the 12th month for free. As an added service, SamTrans' Pass Sales Department
will track the passes and mail a new pass out each month, including the bonus 12th
pass.
Riders who participate in the Ticket-by-Mail Program for 11 consecutive months
automatically receive their 12th pass free.
All riders currently purchasing Senior/Disabled, Adult Local, SF Local or Express
monthly passes are eligible to participate.
Youth passes are not included because they are already substantially discounted. The
Summer Youth Pass, good for three months of unlimited rides, is only $25. During the
school-year SamTrans participates in a program to allow needy families to purchase the
monthly Youth Pass at a 27 percent discount under the regular price.
