Mark Simon to Join SamTrans
Veteran Peninsula newsman Mark Simon will join the San Mateo County Transit District
as a senior staff member, General Manager/CEO Michael J. Scanlon announced today.
Simon, political reporter and columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle since 1992,
will serve as special assistant to the CEO, Scanlon said. His wide-ranging duties
will include assignments for SamTrans, together with the Peninsula Corridor Joint
Powers Board (Caltrain) and San Mateo County Transportation Authority.
Simon will assume many of the functions currently handled by Deputy General Manager
Jim Gallagher, who is scheduled to retire this summer.
A graduate of Skyline College and San Jose State University, Simon began his media
career in 1973. Joining the Redwood City Tribune as a reporter in 1976, he has
covered local, regional and national politics for more than 25 years, together with
noteworthy events such as the Super Bowl, World Series, and World Cup. His “Tour de
Peninsula”, an annual bicycle excursion he initiated as a Chronicle columnist, has
become a regional tradition attracting hundreds of cyclists.
In addition to his newspaper activities, Simon is co-host, with Bob Marks, of “The
Game”, a Peninsula-based current affairs show on cable systems from Daly City to San
Jose. He also is a frequent guest on Bay Area TV and radio public affairs programs.
“Mark is familiar with key issues and individuals in both public and private
sectors,” Scanlon said. “His knowledge and experience, together with outstanding
communications skills, will be immensely valuable as we meet new mobility challenges
in the many communities we serve.”
A fourth-generation San Franciscan, Simon resides in Redwood City with his wife,
Kathryn, and his two sons, Alex and David.
