SamTrans Elects Officers, Adds New Member
Michael Nevin was unanimously elected chair of the San Mateo County Transit District
Board of Directors at its January meeting.
Nevin is a member of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors and is appointed by
that body to sit on the transit district's board.
Jerry Hill, also a member of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, was elected
vice chair.
The Cities Selection Committee also named a new member to the SamTrans board to
replace outgoing member Mary Janney, a former Burlingame city councilperson. Marc
Hershman, a member of the Millbrae City Council, was appointed by the committee to
represent the cities in central San Mateo County.
In addition, three board members were re-appointed to serve another four-year term.
They include John Barbour, the public member representing the Coastside; Michael
Guingona, Daly City councilperson and cities-selection representative for Northern
San Mateo County; and Jerry Hill, representing the Board of Supervisors.
The transit district board consists of nine members: two from the county board of
supervisors; one transportation expert, appointed by the board of supervisors; three
members appointed by the Cities Selection Committee to represent, north, central and
south San Mateo County; three public members (one of whom must reside on the
coastside) appointed by the above six members.
The SamTrans board meets the second Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. at SamTrans'
offices, 1250 San Carlos Ave. in San Carlos.
The transit district operates a complex network of buses, shuttles and paratransit
vehicles throughout San Mateo County and into parts of San Francisco and Palo Alto.
It also is the managing agency for the San Mateo County Transportation Authority,
which manages the expenditure of Measure A funds, and is a partner in Caltrain rail
service and the BART extension to Millbrae.
