SamTrans Announces Annual Safety Awards
SamTrans bus operators drive the equivalent distance of California's length - from
San Diego to Eureka - about 44 times each month without a preventable accident.
Throw in uncontrollable factors like weather and traffic conditions and this safety
record becomes much more impressive.
It takes a team of excellent bus operators supported by outstanding maintenance
workers keeping equipment in top condition to make it happen. In 2003, the transit
district's 350 bus operators drove 7.4 million miles and the 90 employees in the
SamTrans Maintenance Department worked nearly 137,000 total hours keeping all those
buses well-maintained.
In recognition of the district's outstanding safety record the Board presented the
district's annual base safety awards, which are given to the operations and
maintenance base with the best safety record for the year. The district has two
bases.
North Base won the 2003 Operations Base Safety Award in honor of its safe driving
record. North Base bus operators drove an average of 110,000 miles between
preventable accidents. Maintenance employees at the John T. Ficarra South Base
Operations and Maintenance facility were awarded the Maintenance Safe Base Award for
their overall safe work environment. South Base Maintenance worked approximately
55,674 hours without lost-time injuries.
"At SamTrans, safety is our number one priority," said Chief Executive Officer Mike
Scanlon. "Our bus operators and maintenance employees alike take pride in their
attention to safety on the job, and it's reflected in our agency's safety record."
