SamTrans to Adjust Service to Reduce Costs
The San Mateo County Transit District Board of Directors voted unanimously at its
July meeting to some moderate cuts to reduce costs and bring service into better
alignment with demand. The adjustments will go into effect on Aug. 22.
The proposed changes will affect 14 routes. Four low-performing routes will be
eliminated and other routes will offer fewer trips. The service reduction, which will
affect an estimated 376 riders, will save the district about $1.4 million in annual
operating costs.
Route 15 on the south Coastside, will be eliminated, as will Routes 34 and 44 in
Brisbane and San Bruno, respectively, and 261 in San Carlos.
In response to a suggestion made at one of four public meetings, Coastside Route 17
will be extended on one round trip in the morning and one round trip in the evening
to serve the coastal community of Pescadero. In San Carlos, duplicate free service is
offered by the S.C.O.O.T. shuttle.
Frequencies will be reduced on express Routes DX, FX and local Routes 120 and 121
(Daly City) and 342, a Millbrae route which serves the BART station. Two late-night
weekend round-trips on Route KX also will be eliminated.
SamTrans has reserved the option of eliminating two late-night routes – 297 and 397
connecting Redwood City and East Palo Alto to San Francisco International Airport –
should the airport discontinue the supplemental funding it provides for this service.
However, the airport has indicated that it will continue its partnership with
SamTrans, so service should remain uninterrupted.
The changes were made after soliciting comment at four public meetings and a public
hearing. Comments also were received by mail and through the district’s Web site.
