SamTrans Service Changes Take Effect Aug. 22
The San Mateo County Transit District will make changes to 14 routes on Aug. 22.
Four routes which have experienced low ridership for quite some time will be
eliminated and other routes will offer fewer trips. The cuts are being made to reduce
costs and to more closely align service with rider demand.
While Route 15 on the south Coastside will be eliminated, Route 17 will be extended
on one round-trip in the morning and one round-trip in the afternoon to serve the
coastal community of Pescadero.
Route 261 in San Carlos also will be eliminated. The S.C.O.O.T. shuttle offers
duplicate service, which is free.
Route 34 in Brisbane and Route 44 in San Bruno will be eliminated.
Frequencies will be reduced on express Routes DX, (Pacifica to San Francisco) and FX
(Foster City to San Francisco), and local Routes 120 and 121 (Daly City) and 342, a
Millbrae route which serves the BART station. Two late-night weekend round-trips on
Route KX also will be eliminated.
SamTrans has reserved the option of eliminating two late-night routes – 297 and 397
connecting Redwood City and East Palo Alto to San Francisco International Airport –
should the airport discontinue the supplemental funding it provides for this service.
However, the airport has indicated that it will continue its partnership with
SamTrans, so service should remain uninterrupted.
The changes will save SamTrans about $1.4 million in annual operating costs. The
district’s strategy for addressing its budgetary challenges also included the
elimination of 47 staff positions.
The changes were made after soliciting comment at four public meetings and a public
hearing. Comments also were received by mail and through the district’s Web site.
