SamTrans and BART to Continue SFO-Extension Talks
The San Mateo County Transit District and BART have agreed to enter a discussion
period immediately, with mediation by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission on
issues related to the extension service plan and the repayment of SamTrans'
outstanding loan to BART. During the discussion period, BART has agreed not to
pursue litigation against the transit district.
As a result of this agreement, SamTrans will pay 80 percent or $7.12 million toward
the current invoices and will pay the additional 20 percent after the two parties
have reached an agreement.
This is an important step in the partnership to operate the BART-SFO extension
service in San Mateo County.
"SamTrans is looking forward to making this extension a vital piece of the county's
transportation fabric," SamTrans Board Chair and San Mateo County Supervisor Mike
Nevin said. "It's critical that we provide effective BART service without
jeopardizing any of San Mateo County's other passenger services."
During the discussion period, the agencies will attempt to reach an agreement on the
creation of a new affordable service plan, which could include service adjustments,
ridership development and revenue generation. These plans would be implemented at
the earliest possible date. In addition, the two agencies will work out a schedule
for BART to repay SamTrans for capital costs and real estate purchases.
The two parties will take up the issues regarding responsibility for SFO Airport
charges at a later date, per this agreement.
