SamTrans Introduces Transit Thursdays
For many people, Thursdays meant “Must See TV.” But with “Friends” off the air the
San Mateo County Transit District has come up with another reason to look forward to
Thursdays.
As part of the district’s participation in the American Public Transportation
Association’s Communities in Motion program, district staffers are holding “Transit
Thursdays” each week in October.
The events, which are intended to highlight public transportation options and provide
transit information, kicked off today with an event at the Ikea store in East Palo
Alto. SamTrans’ Regional Express Buses made an unscheduled stop at the popular home
furnishings’ store to highlight the new express service and other transit options for
the area.
The schedule of events includes:
- Oct. 14 at 9:45 a.m., SamTrans’ low floor bus will be making a special stop at
the El Camino Senior Center in South San Francisco. The buses offer easier boarding
for the elderly because of their low floors. Seniors will be introduced to these
new buses and will take a guided tour along Route 122.
- Oct. 21, 9:30 a.m. to noon, district representatives will be at all five of the
Hillsdale Shopping Center’s bus stops handing out goody bags to passengers as a
“thank you” for using the district’s services.
- Oct. 28, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., SamTrans will hold a multi-lingual event at the
Bellehaven School and Library in East Menlo Park for the Hispanic community.
District representatives will be on hand to provide the kids with goody bags and
offer multi-lingual transit information on SamTrans, Caltrain, shuttle and BART
services. SamTrans buses will also be on hand for curious kids and parents.
The transit district is San Mateo County’s mobility manager, operating SamTrans bus
service, shuttle and paratransit service and partnering in the operation of the BART
SFO extension service. SamTrans also is responsible for managing the Peninsula’s
Caltrain service and administering the proceeds of San Mateo County’s Measure A
half-cent sales tax, which was passed by voters in 1988 to make transportation
improvements.
For information about district services, call 1-800-660-4287 or for the
hearing-impaired (650) 508-6448.
