SamTrans Reserves Symbolic Seat To Honor Rosa Parks
In commemoration of her simple, yet important contribution to the birth of the civil
rights movement, SamTrans will be honoring the life of Rosa Parks, the Montgomery, Alabama woman,
whose refusal to give up her seat in the “Whites Only” section of a segregated bus in 1955,
gave birth to the Civil Rights Movement. Parks passed away on Oct. 24, at age 92.
On Dec. 1, exactly 50 years after Parks’ act of civil disobedience, the front seat of all
SamTrans buses will be reserved, to honor her life, her contributions and her struggle for
greater equality for all Americans. The reserved seat will feature a photo of Parks, as she
sat in that famous bus seat.
“This isn’t a memorial; this is a celebration,” said Michael Scanlon, General Manager/CEO for
the San Mateo County Transit District. “It all started on a bus, Dec. 1, 1955, and it’s only
fitting that buses play a role in commemorating the courageous act of a woman who just didn’t
want to put up with anymore injustice.”
This observance will be followed by a proclamation in Parks’ honor at the Transit District’s
board meeting on Dec. 14, and the installation of a set of commemorative bus seats in the lobby
of the district headquarters in San Carlos.
Regular bus service will not be interrupted. For information on fares and schedules,
call toll free 1-800-660-4287 (TTY 650-508-6448).
