SamTrans Keeps Community in Motion
The San Mateo County Transit District will join public transit agencies across the
country to celebrate “Communities in Motion” beginning Thursday, Oct. 6. SamTrans, a
member of the American Public Transportation Association, will sponsor three events
during the month of October to spread the word about the benefits of public
transportation.
This Thursday, SamTrans representatives will take seniors from the San Mateo Senior
Center on a bus ride. The seniors will ride Route 295, which serves the center located
on Alameda de las Pulgas, to downtown San Mateo where they will be greeted by a
three-piece band playing a selection of swing-era music.
The Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance will join SamTrans in handing out
information about their services. The Alliance sponsors a variety of programs to
relieve congestion in San Mateo County, including an incentive program for car pool
users and shuttles between transit centers and work sites.
The seniors will enjoy a movie at Century 21 Downtown San Mateo before taking the bus
back to the senior center. “Riding the bus is very different now than it was 20 or 30
years ago,” said Penny Bertrand, sales and promotions supervisor for the transit
district. “We want seniors to experience all the new features for themselves by taking
a bus ride.” SamTrans hopes that the experience will encourage people to consider the
bus as an option when planning an outing.
Thursday, Oct. 13, is Customer Appreciation Day. SamTrans staff will ride selected
routes to surprise riders with “goodie bags.” Ridership on SamTrans buses increased
4.7% in August, compared to the previous year. “We want to show our riders that we
appreciate their patronage,” said Bertrand.
On Thursday, Oct. 20, a specially decorated SamTrans bus will visit Martin Elementary
School in South San Francisco. Winning entries from “Art Takes a Bus Ride,” an art
contest jointly sponsored by SamTrans and the county office of education, will be
mounted on the outside of the bus. Several of the student-artists attend Martin School.
Students and their families will be able to see the art work, take a tour inside the bus
and pick up information about riding the bus.
The San Mateo County Transit District is the county’s people-mover. In addition to
operating SamTrans bus service and serving as the administrator for Caltrain, the agency
also provides Redi-Wheels paratransit service for persons with disabilities who are
unable to ride regular fixed-route service. The district operates shuttles that link
transit centers with major employment sites; is the managing agency for the San Mateo
County Transportation Authority, which administers the expenditure of Measure A funds;
and, is a partner in the BART extension to Millbrae.
