Media Advisory: SamTrans Announces Winners of Student Art Contest
What:
“Art Takes a Bus Ride” is a county-wide art contest for students co-sponsored
by SamTrans and the San Mateo County Office of Education. Nine winning entries, chosen
from more than 350 submissions, will be displayed inside SamTrans buses beginning in
mid-August. The Grand Prize winner, which will be announced on Wednesday, also will be
displayed on the exterior of five buses and featured on a monthly pass.
Public transit systems all over the world use art to transform utilitarian spaces into
places that enrich people’s lives. Public art work is usually found in train stations,
on subway platforms or in transit centers.
“Art Takes a Bus Ride” is a unique traveling exhibit. Because it will be
displayed inside SamTrans buses, people will be able to visit this “art gallery” on
their way to work, school or wherever life takes them.
A slide show of the winning entries will be presented. The artists, who range in age
from first graders to eighth graders, will be in attendance.
