It's a SamTrans Three-Peat at Regional Bus Roadeo

SamTrans’ bus operator and maintenance teams came away winners once again at the 29th annual Northern California Bus Roadeo, claiming the grand champion award for the third time in four years.

In addition, SamTrans’ bus operator team took first place, winning the roadeo’s coveted “Perpetual Trophy” for the second consecutive year.

Jeffrey Johnson, manager of the transit district’s operations training program, was elated by the successful showing by the eight-member SamTrans contingent, which brought home a total of seven awards in six categories of competition.

“Their efforts have brought pride and recognition to SamTrans,” Johnson said. “Only through the contributions of all could our team achieve success.”

Held Aug. 27 at SamTrans’ Operations and Maintenance Facility in South San Francisco, the roadeo presents challenging tests for bus operators, maintenance specialists and instructors alike. Operators, for example, must thread their buses through a tightly constricted course and execute backing and turning maneuvers with surgical precision; maintenance workers, meanwhile, use their trouble-shooting skills to diagnose defects placed in six diagnostic modules.

In a very competitive maintenance competition, the team of Andrew McCambridge, Robert Santiago and Ryan Plante took second place, with a score of 1,256, just five points below first place.

Senior instructor William Snell finished second with a score of 534 points in the instructor competition, while Ron Jordan finished third with a score of 522. Together they took second place in this category, with a total of 1,056 points.

In the bus operator competition, Edwin Freeman finished second with a score of 585. Bernardo Hernandez finished fourth with a score of 558 and Rodrigo Eguilos finished sixth with 545 points. The three men won first place in the Operator Team combination with a score of 1,688.

Freeman scored a combined total of 1,159 points in the local and regional competitions and will join mechanics McCambridge, Santiago and Plante at the APTA International Bus Operator and Maintenance Roadeo in Dallas Sept. 24.
