SamTrans And Millbrae To Break Ground On El Camino Revitalization Project

The City of Millbrae and SamTrans will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Millbrae El Camino Real Landscape Improvement Project, part of the Grand Boulevard initiative to improve and beautify El Camino Real. The event will take place Friday, April 21, 2006, at 10:00 a.m., on the El Camino Real Frontage Road at Victoria Avenue in Millbrae.

"Millbrae is pleased to partner with SamTrans and begin the work of making El Camino Real a special destination along the Peninsula," said Millbrae Mayor Robert Gottschalk, who will be among the speakers at the event. Other speakers include Millbrae Vice Mayor and SamTrans Board Vice Chair Marc Hershman, County Supervisor Mark Church, and U.S. Congressman Tom Lantos.

The Grand Boulevard is a joint effort of San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties, including local municipalities and regional and community stakeholders, to bring together communities along El Camino Real, in order to create regional solutions to spur economic growth, housing opportunities, and community vitality. The revitalization project will not only improve the artery’s aesthetics, but it will also expand pedestrian, bicycle and transit access along El Camino, in a way that creates a "sense of place" and improved quality of life.

“SamTrans has been a vital link for people along El Camino for the past 30 years,” said Vice Chair Hershman. “It is only fitting that we take part in this effort to make the boulevard an attractive place to be, while providing safe, clean and reliable public transit options to get there and back.”

Speakers will participate in the “first shovel full” along a stretch of El Camino Real that will soon undergo landscape improvements, and a rendering of the proposed project will be on hand for public viewing.
