SamTrans Stubs Out Cigarettes In Bus Shelters
The San Mateo County Transit District Board of
Directors recently passed an ordinance which
prohibits smoking in SamTrans bus shelters.
The board voted to pass the ordinance to
enhance passenger safety and to reduce litter
in and around the shelters.
“No smoking” signs have been placed in
all of the district’s 208 shelters.
Violators of the ordinance can be cited
by local law enforcement officers.
SamTrans operates 55 routes throughout
San Mateo County and into parts of Palo
Alto and San Francisco. On an average
weekday, nearly 50,000 riders use SamTrans
bus service to go to work, school, shopping
or go about their daily activities.
