Transit District Board Elects New Officers, Welcomes New Member

The San Mateo County Transit District elected new board officers at its monthly meeting. Board member Adrienne Tissier was elected chair, and board member Zoe Kersteen-Tucker was elected vice chair, in unanimous votes.

Tissier, who has served on the board since 2005, is president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. Vice Chair Kersteen-Tucker, who served as chair of the board’s Finance Committee, is a public member of the board, representing the Coastside region.

The Cities Selection Committee, made up of mayors of the county’s cities, selected San Mateo Mayor Carole Groom to serve on the Transit District board representing the Central County. She replaces termed-out Millbrae Councilman Marc Hershman.

The board also appointed Director Karyl Matsumoto, who is Mayor Pro Tem for the City of South San Francisco, to be its representative on the San Mateo County Transportation Authority Board of Directors.

During 2007, SamTrans experienced a growth of nearly 3.2 percent in average weekday ridership, and maintained an on-time average of more than 90 percent over its 54 routes that travel throughout San Mateo County and into parts of San Francisco and Palo Alto.

The Transit District’s board has nine members, with two representatives from the county board of supervisors; three city council representatives, who are appointed by the Cities Selection Committee; three public members from different geographic regions of the county; and a transportation expert, who is appointed by the county board of supervisors. The Transit District board meets the second Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. at 1250 San Carlos Ave. in San Carlos, two blocks from El Camino bus service and the train station.
