Board Voted to Eliminate Routes 11, 43 & 89

Effective Aug. 6, SamTrans will no longer operate routes 11, 43 and 89.

In July, the SamTrans Board of Directors voted unanimously to discontinue the three routes due to low ridership and high operational costs at a public hearing.

The three routes, all of which serve schools in Daly City, Millbrae and Atherton respectively, run only in the afternoons and cover areas that are also covered by existing routes. The elimination of these routes will save approximately $170,000 that can be used to improve service elsewhere in the system.

For over two years, daily ridership has averaged between five and ten passengers per day across Routes 11, 43 and 89. SamTrans regularly monitors routes to ensure resources are being properly allocated. These routes were identified as underperforming and SamTrans staff brought he matter to the Board’s attention in May 2017.

Riders who used Route 11 are advised to consider the 110, 112 or 120 that duplicate much of the route. Route 43 is covered by ECR, 38, 133, 140, 141, and 398, while Route 89 is covered by 82, 83, 84, 86, 88, 286 and 296.
