San Mateo County Transportation Authority
The San Mateo County Transportation Authority, an independent agency formed to administer the proceeds of a 20-year countywide half-cent sales tax, contracts with the San Mateo County Transit District to be its managing agency. Voters approved Measure A, which established the program, in 1988. In 2004, voters reauthorized the half-cent sales tax and its publicly developed expenditure plan for an additional 25 years.
As the TA nears the end of its first authorization, the agency is engaged in a number of projects to improve transportation throughout the county.
Highway 101 Auxiliary Lanes
In 2007, the agency broke ground on the fourth phase of the Highway 101 Auxiliary Lane project, which will add four-and-
one-half miles of auxiliary lanes between Millbrae and San Mateo. Eventually, the lanes will extend from county line to county line for
a total length of 26 miles.
Auxiliary lanes reduce freeway congestion by providing a merging area for cars to enter and exit the freeway.
Half Moon Bay Highway Improvement Project
Construction continues on a project to improve the intersection of Highways 92 and 1 in Half Moon Bay. As the gateway to the city’s charming, historic downtown, this project will relieve congestion for residents and visitors alike.
The $21.8 million project is scheduled for completion in fall 2008.
Dumbarton Rail
The Dumbarton Rail Corridor Project will extend commuter rail service across the South Bay between the Peninsula and the East Bay by rebuilding a historic transbay rail bridge. The second phase of the environmental study is currently underway.
New Strategic Plan
The TA is currently developing a new strategic plan, which will serve as a blueprint for the next 25 years. The plan will focus on the completion of current projects and outline a transitional strategy for the implementation of the new measure, which begins in 2009.
