Transit District to Increase Safety and Security Measures at Central Headquarters:
Construction will begin in May on a project aimed at improving the safety and security conditions at the San Mateo County Transit District’s central headquarters in San Carlos.
The project includes the addition of a clear enclosure around the elevator banks in the lobby of the building, located at 1250 San Carlos Avenue. Access to the elevator banks will come through three retractable turnstiles, which will open up when swiped with an employee identification card. Visitors will check in and out at the new guard station (a situation that is similar to the current state at the building). There will be a single gate for employees exiting the building, which will also be activated by access card.
The project also involves the installation of a new customer reception center that patrons will be able to access without entering the building. The receptionist will be located in a glass-enclosed office adjacent to the set of doors at the left of the main entrance to the building. This will improve the flow of customer transactions. Currently, customers have to pass through security and take an elevator to the second floor to reach the receptionist center.
Work on the project is scheduled to last through late August/early September. During that time, there will be light construction work in and near the first floor lobby between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays. Most of the construction work will entail drilling holes, running wires, and prepping the new installations. No heavy machinery will be used as part of the project.
Because of the work, there will be temporary taped-off areas in and near the lobby for the next several months.
