SamTrans buses are equipped with bike racks, which hold three bikes.

Two additional bikes are allowed inside the bus, depending on passenger loads. Electric bikes (e-bikes) are only allowed on racks unless the racks are full. There is no guarantee that there will be space on any specific bus for your bike or e-bike.

SamTrans is not responsible for damages to or caused by bicycles, e-bikes, or scooters on SamTrans property or vehicles.
  • Bikes with a single seat.
  • Two-wheel bicycles.
  • E-bikes (front rack only; not inside bus unless rack is full).
  • Maximum limits for bikes and e-bikes:

    • Weight: 55 pounds.
    • Wheelbase: 44 inches.
    • Tire width: 2.3 inches.
  • Bikes with gas engines.
  • Tandem bikes.
  • Bikes with 3 or more wheels.

There is no age limit for riders using the bike racks or bringing bikes on board.

Riders must be able to load and unload their bikes, e-bikes, or scooters without assistance from the bus operator.

  1. Before the bus arrives remove all detachable items from the bike or e-bike, such as bags, air pumps, and water bottles.
  2. Always load and unload from the curb side of the bus.
  3. If using the rack, squeeze the silver release handle and lower the rack from its upright position.
  4. Lift your bike or e-bike into the rack, placing the front wheel where indicated. The first bike in the rack should be loaded closest to the bus.
  5. Pull the support arm over the front tire; it should rest securely on the tire, not the frame.
  6. Board the bus and pay your fare. Sit close to the front to keep your bike or e-bike in view.

E-Scooters: Must be folded or stored so they do not block aisles.

E-Bikes Inside the Bus: Allowed only if the exterior racks are full, and must be placed in the designated ADA area. If a passenger with a disability needs this space, you must relocate your bike/e-bike or wait for the next bus.

  1. Let the bus driver know when approaching your stop.
  2. Exist through the front door of the bus.
  3. Lift the support arm from the front tire and lower it to the magnet on the rack.
  4. Remove your bike or e-bike from the rack.
  5. If the rack is empty, raise it against the bus.

All unclaimed bikes left on racks will be sent to SamTrans Lost and Found.
