Grand Boulevard Initiative (GBI)
What is the Grand Boulevard Initiative?
El Camino Real (State Route 82), more commonly known as El Camino, is a Caltrans-maintained road and the spine of San Mateo County. The Grand Boulevard Initiative seeks to transform El Camino Real into a safe and vibrant street where people of all ages and abilities can travel comfortably. SamTrans, the cities along El Camino, and other public sector partners, and advocacy and public interest groups are working together through GBI to better coordinate and more quickly advance improvements on the corridor.
SamTrans is currently developing a draft of the GBI Action Plan, which is the precursor to starting the Caltrans Project Initiation Document process. More information can be found on the GBI Action Plan webpage.
GBI is working to implement the following streetscape changes:
Safety improvements: traffic calming, traffic signal gap closures, medians, and lighting.
Active transportation improvements: wider crosswalks, crosswalk improvements, separated bikeways, and street trees.
Transit improvements: bus stop enhancements, bus lanes, transit signal priority, and improved access to bus stops.
Project Area
GBI focuses on streetscape improvements in 14 jurisdictions along El Camino Real in San Mateo County. These jurisdictions are Atherton, Belmont, Burlingame, Colma, Daly City, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, Millbrae, North Fair Oaks, Redwood City, San Bruno, San Carlos, San Mateo, and South San Francisco.
The following map shows the various studies and projects that are currently underway along El Camino Real. GBI is coordinating these efforts and will support many of them through the Caltrans process, helping turn plans into action.
Project Schedule
SamTrans is sponsoring the first phase of a coordinated Caltrans project development process, called a Project Initiation Document (PID) for all of El Camino Real in San Mateo County. Once complete, the PID will define the purpose and need for the changes along the corridor as well as potential design options.

Funding Partners
The GBI Action Plan and Project Initiation Document are funded by SamTrans, a grant from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, as well as a grant of local transportation sales tax dollars from the San Mateo County Transportation Authority.
