The San Mateo County Transit District has worked with San Francisco and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority since the 1980s to save and operate Caltrain, which runs from San Francisco to San Jose/Gilroy.The Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board operates and owns the Caltrain rail corridor and has contracted with the District to be the managing agency.
The Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board is a tri-county board, comprised of nine representatives, three each from San Francisco, San Mateo County Transit District and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.
The JPB purchased the Caltrain right of way in 1991 and assumed responsibility for operating the service in 1992.
