SamTrans Board of Directors Passes Operating and Capital Budgets

The San Mateo County Transit District Board of Directors unanimously approved the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 Operating and Capital Budgets at its regular board meeting this month. The adopted SamTrans FY2023 Operating Budget is $231.9 million and the Capital Budget is $30.6 million.

Funds from the operating budget will support day-to-day management of District services, including motor bus and Contract Urban Bus (CUB) service, among other expenditures. Over the last fiscal year, SamTrans has continued to recover from the negative impacts the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has had on ridership. With the Bay Area continuing to return to a pre-pandemic normal, the FY2023 budget assumes a continued ridership recovery. The FY2023 budget also assumes the implementation of Reimagine SamTrans, the comprehensive operational analysis of the SamTrans bus system designed to respond to ridership and travel patterns and improve service throughout San Mateo County.

In keeping with the District’s need to conserve financial resources, the Capital Budget’s final recommendations reflect the most critical projects that support the District’s goals. Approved projects include ensuring vehicles and facilities are maintained in a state of good repair, assessment and implementation in several district-wide information technology systems, and investments in infrastructure and green mobility for the county.

Adoption of the budgets is an important step along the way towards a future that provides service that is relevant, adaptable and financially sustainable. SamTrans ridership is at approximately 72% of prepandemic ridership levels, ahead of the national average of approximately 61%.

The District’s FY 2023 Operating Budget begins July 1, 2022 and ends on June 30, 2023.
