Qi Ni Chen, a 15-year bus operator, and Zhuolun (Alan) Liao, an eight-year maintenance mechanic, have been named SamTrans’ 2023 Employees of the Year.

Each year, SamTrans recognizes the achievements of its bus operators and bus maintenance staff with Employees of the Year honors, and Chen and Liao were formally recognized at the agency’s April Board of Directors meeting today. To be considered for the Employee of the Year awards, bus operators and maintenance workers must not have had any preventable accidents, unexcused absences, or disciplinary actions on their 2023 record.

Chen began her career with SamTrans in 2009 as a full-time bus operator. Before joining SamTrans, Chen never operated a 60-foot bus, but after her 10-week training program she earned her way into a top honor at the agency.

Liao joined SamTrans Bus Maintenance in 2016 as a utility worker. He was promoted to Mechanic C in only one-year and promoted again to Mechanic B in a few short months after that. A year later, he was promoted to his current position of Mechanic A as he leads the graveyard shift. Prior to coming to SamTrans, Liao worked in a mechanic shop for a few years while attending Skyline College for automotive repair.
