SamTrans has implemented a temporary but extended detour for routes ECR and 397 as Caltrans continues work on the El Camino Real Roadway Renewal Project.
The detour is expected to remain in place into June, when SamTrans updates service schedules as part of its regular seasonal adjustments.
The detour affects both northbound and southbound service between Rosedale Avenue in Burlingame and East Bellevue Avenue in San Mateo.
Route ECR provides frequent service every 15 minutes daily between Daly City BART and Palo Alto Transit Center. Route 397 operates overnight hourly service between Salesforce Transit Center and Palo Alto Transit Center.
Under the detour, buses are operating along California Drive. Northbound buses will travel via East Bellevue Avenue to San Mateo Drive, which becomes California Drive, before returning to El Camino Real via Trousdale Drive in Burlingame. Southbound buses will detour onto California Drive at Rosedale Avenue and return to El Camino Real at East Bellevue Avenue.
During this period, buses are serving Route 292 stops along California Drive. SamTrans staff are coordinating with the city of Burlingame to install accessible bus stops in areas along California Drive that currently lack them.
“Because construction conditions can change throughout a project of this length, we will continue to evaluate opportunities to adjust service,” said SamTrans Planning Director Millie Tolleson. “However, even when a street appears open, inaccessible curbs or incomplete infrastructure can make it unsafe for customers to board or exit buses — especially for riders who use wheelchairs or other mobility support devices. Our priority is ensuring service remains safe and accessible for everyone.”
Riders should plan for additional travel time and check for service updates before traveling.
