SamTrans Designates May as Older Americans Month

May is full of celebrations, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and Cinco de Mayo. May is also “Older Americans Month (OAM).” In 1963, President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens designated May as OAM for the purposes of honoring the contribution of past and present seniors.

In celebration, the SamTrans Board of Directors adopted a proclamation designating May as “Older Americans Month” at its May meeting this week. SamTrans’ commitment to providing quality transit services to senior citizens in San Mateo County recognizes that access to services and activities enables older Americans to preserve their dignity and independence.

In aiding senior mobility and independence, SamTrans has a Senior Mobility program that helps seniors unfamiliar with transit services to become educated and familiar with transit options and routes to shopping, medical appointments and entertainment.

For more information about SamTrans’ mobility program call 1-800-660-4287 (TTY 650-508-6448) or visit the Keep Senior Moving webpage at www.samtrans.com/.
