September is Transit Month, and SamTrans is celebrating in a big way — with a month full of activities honoring public transit, the communities we serve and 50 years of keeping San Mateo County moving.
Transit Month is an opportunity to celebrate the many ways public transportation connects people to jobs, schools, neighborhoods, events and each other. For SamTrans, this year’s celebration carries extra meaning as we mark 50 years of service.
The month’s events will feature a Board proclamation, a ride along with SamTrans General Manager/CEO April Chan, social media activities, regional events and our 50th anniversary celebration. There are plenty of ways to join the celebration throughout September.
Here’s what’s happening:
Board Proclamation – Sept. 2
The SamTrans Board of Directors will officially recognize Transit Month with a proclamation during its Sept. 2 board meeting at SamTrans’ headquarters in Millbrae. The proclamation will celebrate the important role public transportation plays in connecting San Mateo County communities and supporting a more accessible and sustainable future.
Ride along with April Chan – Sept. 11
On Sept. 11, General Manager/CEO April Chan will join transit leaders from throughout the Bay Area traveling from the East Bay to Millbrae for a regional ride along. The journey will highlight how transit agencies work together to connect communities across the Bay Area and provide riders with seamless regional travel.
Follow along on social media – Throughout September
Transit Month will take over SamTrans social media throughout September. Follow along for fun facts, transit highlights, SamTrans giveaways, 50th anniversary memories and other ways to celebrate the people, places and connections that have been part of SamTrans’ story for the past five decades.
Join the regional ride contest – Throughout September
SamTrans is also participating in the regional Ride Contest, encouraging people to get out and explore the Bay Area by transit. Whether you’re a daily rider or trying transit for the first time, it’s a fun way to discover where SamTrans and regional transit can take you.
SamTrans 50th Anniversary Celebration – Sept. 26
The celebration reaches its peak Sept. 26, when SamTrans welcomes employees, riders, community members and partners to its headquarters in Millbrae for the SamTrans 50th Anniversary Celebration. There will be food, a kid’s area, music and tours of our new headquarters.
The event will celebrate five decades of moving people, connecting communities and helping shape the future of transportation in San Mateo County.
Join SamTrans this September as we celebrate Transit Month, honor our history and look toward the future of public transportation in San Mateo County.
